“Healthy” Gluten Free Apple Crisp Recipe

purelyrevivewell · November 27, 2019 · Leave a Comment

Apple crisp is perfect for the holiday season.  Not just because apples are in season when fall comes but also because this warm desert hits the spot when cool weather comes.  This recipe will turn an apple a day into pure deliciousness!  And considering it doesn’t use gluten or real sugar, you can consider it a somewhat healthier desert option.

You will need one small and one medium size mixing bowl as well as a 9” square baking pan.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 35-40 Minutes | Total: 1 Hour

Ingredients:

Apple Filling
2 lbs or about 4-5 green apples
1 tablespoon lemon or orange juice
¼ cup coconut sugar or stevia
1 tsp of cinnamon
¼ tsp of nutmeg

Topping
1 cup almond flower or all-purpose gluten free flower
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup of coconut sugar or stevia
4 tablespoons melted butter
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
¼ teaspoon sea salt
½ cup chopped pecans (optional but recommended)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Slice apples and place in a large mixing bowl.  The apple filling and the topping will be prepared in two separate bowls.
  3. Prepare apple filling first sprinkling lemon or orange juice over the apples and mixing.  Then add stevia next then the cinnamon and nutmeg and mix apples thoroughly.
  4. Place in the pan and start timer for 35-40 minutes
  5. Next prepare the topping.  In a smaller bowl add the melted butter.
  6. Add cinnamon and sea salt and stir
  7. Next add the gluten free flower of your choice, rolled oats and coconut sugar.  Pecans are optional but may make a great addition to the topping.
  8. Pause the timer and take the dish out of the oven to place the topping on the apples.  Resume baking to finish the dish!

Let the crisp cool a little after baking and enjoy a warm guilt-free desert!  In case you didn’t think it could get any better, I love to put some coco whip on mine or if you eat dairy ice cream can make a wonderful addition to this desert as well.  Leftovers keep well for a few days.
