Balancing hormones is something so many of us struggle with and finding balance has been a major part of my health journey. Fatigue, blood sugar spikes and plummets, mood swings, brain fog, hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, acne and even anxiety can all be due to hormone imbalance. Our hormones send silent but vital signals though out our bodies. Hormone therapy treatments can make your body dependent on drugs, mask diseases and cause serious side effects. As an alternative, essential oils can be a huge beneficial to assist balancing hormones in a natural way.

Here are some of the best essential oils to use to help you find your balance:
Clary Sage
The biggest effect of clary sage is that it helps balance out estrogen production in the body. Many hormone issues today such as PCOS and estrogen based cancers can be linked to excess estrogen in the body. This may be because of high estrogen in our foods, skin care, or environment such as from cleaning products.
In 2014 a study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that inhalation of clary sage oil had the ability to reduce cortisol levels by 36% and improved thyroid hormone levels (TSH). The study was done on 22 post-menopausal women in their 50’s, some of which were diagnosed with depression. At the end of trial the research stated that “clary sage oil had a statistically significant effect on lowering cortisol and had an anti-depressant effect improving mood”. (c)
Whether you are looking for a natural remedy for PMS cramps or happen to know high estrogen levels are a problem clary sage is an oil I highly recommend.
Geranium
Geranium oil is adaptogenic for stress – which most of us need! It’s aroma is soothing and provides emotional support as well as craving control and getting that blood sugar balanced is a vital part to balancing hormones. Geranium oil can work well for balancing no matter what stage of life you’re in from pre-teen to post-menopause.
Lavender
Lavender is a go to oil for so many things and that includes hormones. Because stress can be one factor in throwing our hormones out of whack, lavender which relaxes and soothes the mind and body is a good solution.
Thyme
Thyme is cleansing and purifying. Research in the Proceedings of Society of Biology and Medicine discovered thyme essential oil to have balancing effects on progesterone. Both men and women can be low in progesterone which can be linked with infertility, PCOS, depression as well as other imbalances. Thyme oil can improve progesterone function and balance to assist in finding balance.
Sandalwood
Are testosterone levels the problem? Sandalwood is very good at balancing out testosterone levels and is also known to be a natural aphrodisiac. It’s a common scent in many perfumes and colognes and smells wonderful. Sandalwood is also known to be extremely relaxing making it a great oil to use at night for better rest.
If mixing up oils and figuring out the right recipes is daunting for you, I recommend a blend. NYR Organic has one called Women’s Balance that comes as a blend in a bottle or a roller. But really, these oils can be beneficial to both men and women. The women’s balance blend. This blend includes: Patchouli, Geranium, Frankincense, Bergamot, Rose and Clary Sage without the expensive price tag of buying all these oils separately.
How do I essential oils for hormone balance?
You can get your endocrine zen in several ways. Diffusing is a popular way to use the oils and I also love using an essential oil roller. Put 3-4 drops of oils into your diffuser and let the aroma fill the room. If you are on the go a lot, a roller is super convenient. I like to use the oils with acupressure points. Apply the roller on the back of your neck to interact with your nervous system, the bottom of your feet has so many nerves and acupressure points as well.
Two good acupressure points to try are:
SP6 – On the inside surface of your leg, four fingers width above the inner ankle bone. Massage your roller on this point. (b)
LV8 – On the inner leg area just under the knee joint. This is a good pressure point for both male and female hormone issues. (b)
LV3- This point is excellent for stress relief. Place the tip of the index finger between the webbing of your big toe and 2nd toe. Slide your finger up about ½ inch until you find an indentation.
